Es profesor de exégesis en el Pontificio Instituto Bíblico. Estudió en Innsbruck y completó el año de estudios teológicos en Jerusalén. Una beca Humboldt con Eckart Otto en Múnich le llevó a completar su Habilitación sobre el Deuteronomio. Enseñó durante dos años en Londres (Heythrop College), y luego también en Nairobi, Berkeley y Manila. Entre sus numerosas publicaciones destacan The Fall of Jerusalem and the rise of the Torah (Mohr Siebeck 2016) y The Decalogue and its Cultural Influence (Sheffield Phoenix Press 2013).
